The Rub “Future Classics” Mix for Adidas Originals

Future Classics Mixtape by The Rub & Brooklyn Radio by Adidas Originals on Mixcloud

Adidas asked us to make a mix for their Classics series, so we picked up our crystal ball and predicted 25 Future Classics. These are some of our favorite rap records from the last year and change, with a sprinkling of rock, dancehall and trap, mixed in a relentless Rub Radio style.

Ayres and Skinny Friedman talk to Scottie B about Baltimore history, music and culture. Unruly Remixes, a 20 track compilation from Scottie B & Shawn Caesar’s Unruly Records which includes much of the music played and discussed on this episode, is out now, for free:

Free Download / iTunes / Beatport

The Unruly Remixes compilation has been a long time in the making – 20 years if you count Blunted Dummies’ seminal “House For All” as the starting point. Scottie B and Shawn Caesar launched Unruly Records in 1994, and the label came to define and ultimately dominate the genre of Baltimore Club music from the late 90s all the way up until present day. For the Unruly Remixes we grabbed four of the biggest, loudest, grimiest Baltimore Club hits and gave them to 16 of our favorite producers in virtually every genre of dance music. From Tittsworth’s dark techno, to DJ Sliink’s signature Jersey Club, to Sam Tiba & Myd (Club Cheval)’s space-age R&B, to Nadastrom’s vibey deep house, to LunyP’s tropical percussion jam, to Volta Bureau’s space disco, this is a collection of wildly creative and compelling club records.

Scottie B & DJ Class appeared on Sway in The Morning on Shade 45 / Sirius XM – listen to the mix and interview here.  Big shout to DJ Wonder for making that happen!

Spin debuted a mixtape by Scottie B and DJ Ayres, featuring tracks from the compilation and a bunch of other music from our friends who appear on the compilation.

Hip-Hop History

Just a reminder that Mixcloud has all 31 years of our expansive ‘History of Hip-Hop’ series.

We’re looking for a Rub takeover on the Mixcloud homepage, so please be sure to take a few moments to listen, while at work or at home, to reacquaint yourself with the past decade of Hip-Hop.

This time capsule approach to each year uncovers a slew of already forgotten gems. Ayres says it best: ” I think that hip-hop has this canon of “old-school” jams that get played at parties and make it onto “greatest of all time” lists, but over time the canon shrinks, and you’re left with a bunch of songs that represent current tastes rather than what was good at the time. As a DJ this can be frustrating, because we don’t want to be limited to Biggie, Tupac, Tribe, etc. We love those artists and but also feel there are lots of other great forgotten artists who were maybe less influential but still have records that will rock at a party. So I hope the series can do something to push back against that narrow-mindedness, or forgetfulness, or whatever you want to call it, that shrinking awareness that happens over time. It would be a shame if in 20 years the Throwback at Noon show was comprised of only Eminem, Drake and Lil Wayne…”

Unruly Remixes

Unruly Records brought us four of the best songs from their 20+ years as the premier Baltimore Club label, and we worked with them to put together this huge remix compilation.  It was a ton of work getting this all together.  We’re really proud of this collection of remixes from sixteen of our favorite producers.  Huge thanks to Scottie B and Shawn Caesar from Unruly, to all the remixers, to Dan Dubois for mastering and to Paul Noonan and Josh Ruck for artwork.

The whole comp is out now!
