Return To Top“It’s The Motherfucking Remix” Volumes 1 (2005) and Volume 2 (2006) were mixed compilations of wildly inventive blends and remixes from DJ Ayres, DJ Eleven and Cosmo Baker plus guests from their legendary monthly Brooklyn residency, The Rub. Like the party, the vibe was anything goes, as long as it was funky. Pitchfork called the first CD “Motherfucking Brilliant,” MTV said “cop it – only if you’re ready to dance,” Spin put it on “Heavy Rotation,” and URB called the series “legendary.”
Volume 3 continues the tradition but steps it up exponentially, with contributions from a star-studded cast of DJs from all over North America who have graced the party. Musically, the DJs work from a palette of 40 years of pop music and underground favorites, blending in old school hip-hop, eighties funk, electro anthems, Motown classics, dancehall reggae and even kuduro and dubstep all mixed up in a way that somehow makes perfect sense. New music from the likes of Tittsworth, Kid Sister and Diplo is reimagined and recombined with dusty beats from James Brown, the Lafayette Afro Rock Band and Stevie Wonder.

Return To TopThis time around, The Rub enlisted the help of recent Rub party guest DJs A-Trak (ITF + DMC World Champion/Kanye West’s DJ), DJ Platurn (2004 Scion Free Up Your Mix Champion), Paul Nice (Poughkeepsie’s Finest) and Max Glazer (Federation Sound) in addition to the usual suspects (DJ Crooked, Catchdubs, Diplo, Low Budget, Omega One, Brendan Bring’Em and Mark Ronson) and residents DJ Ayres, DJ Eleven & Cosmo Baker for this second volume of remixes. It’s the Motherfucking Remix Vol 2 sees the crew step their production game up heavily, running the gamut from simple two turntable blends to intricately multitracked and arranged original remixes. In keeping with the arc of The Rub party in Brooklyn, the boys genre-hop across a vast spectrum of music: disco, old school rap, dancehall, 80s pop, indy rock, soul, southern hip-hop, classic break beats, intimate crunk
Return To TopIt’s the Motherfucking Remix Vol 1 was put in “Heavy Rotation” by Spin and praised as “Motherfucking brilliant” by Pitchforkmedia.com. MTV said “cop it – only if you’re ready to dance” and Vapors called it “strictly hot shit.”

“Ayres and Eleven knew they have a good thing going with the Glamorous Life series so they went and did the logical thing and made part 3! (About time too, it’s been like 4 years since the second one.) Like the previous volumes, the selection is top notch 80’s (a great blend of educated sureshots, soulful boogie, garage classics and poppin’ funk) and the mixes and cuts are flawless as you would expect. Features tracks from the likes of Zapp, Teena Marie, Midnight Star, Gap Band, Gwen Guthrie. The dudes don’t disappoint! 34 tracks, about an hour and 15 minutes.”

CD 2:
This CD is dead serious! Everyone is saying rave is back and instead of making some jokey shit to cash in on the trend, DJ Ayres digs deep into the vaults and pulls out a set of his favorite dance records, from the late eighties all the way up to 2007! The Rave is a trip through house and techno and acid and ghetto tech and breaks and jungle and drum’n bass and even a trip to the chillout room at the end. Dedicated to the memory of Robert Kirk, age 17.

Read about Houston in The New York Times and on The Fader blog!
With the sudden explosion of Houston rap (Paul Wall, Slim Thug, Chamillionaire, Bun B, and yes, Mike Jones are now household names) it is easy to forget that Houston has been going hard since the Geto Boys dropped in the late eighties. Houston compiles 27 classic Texas rap records from ’88 to ’05. From street shit to party anthems to chopped and screwed to paint drippin’ and wood grain grippin, JD & Ayres give you a lesson on the city that Devin the Dude, Screwed Up Click, and Scarface all call home.
Bonus CD: DJ Eleven’s Houston Rocks It blazes through 44 new joints by Lil Flip, Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, Bun B, Scarface, Chamillionaire, Z-Ro and more. Awreddy!
Return To TopSpace ‘ N Faders is the quintessential 80s party mix, moving from pop through r&b, house, new wave, and electro. There aren’t any ironic mashups, scratch routines or silly skits, just classic dance music mixed smoothly the whole way through for optimal dance-ability. The vibe is roller rinks, laser beams and pinball machines.

“Chamber Music is tightly mixed and works well as a cohesive snapshot of Ghost’s split personality — warbled soul crooner and gully street spitter. Solid.” – Prefix Mag
Return To TopDudes gone wild! Check out the Turntable Lab review:
“Hip-House 2 finds the BK/Philly duo laying down another party-starting mix of hip-house staples and uptempo hip-hop jams. A large part of the success of the first one was this carefree disregard for the musical Berlin Wall that supposedly divides house music from hip-hop. Ayres and Cosmo do a great job of operating from a middle ground between the two genres, equally appeasing house-heads and hip-hoppers alike by casting a wide net in their choice of track selections, ranging from rare Stetsasonic to the Jungle Brothers, a requisite remix of Missy’s “Lick Shots,” and loads more. Extra props to the boys for keeping things fresh with leftfield/ broken beat joints.” Everything’s mixed in a proficient and smooth style that keeps things moving.” – DJ Language

Return To Top“My man Cosmo Baker from Illy Philly hepped me to this mix-CD by his man Ayres. Flash-Back is a blend tape but not the same ol let-me-put-a-Jay-Z-verse-over-the-Tipsy-beat. Instead, Ayres is all about making connections between songs, mixing, for example, from Ice T to Jay-Z, linking the two by the “I got 99 problems but a bitch ain’t one” hook (yeah dudes, Jay-Z didn’t invent that, sorry) or jumping between Black Star’s (remember them?) “Definition” and BDP’s “Superhoe.” Again – it’s not necessarily a new idea, but executed super clean and better yet, just remind you how good hip-hop has been over the years. Take a trip back with Ayres.” – O-Dub
